Update on Fitness Trial | September 10, 2025
Trigger Warning: This community update mentions the accused, and updates on his hearing
A judge has ruled that Kai-Ji Adam Lo is fit to stand trial following a hearing on his mental fitness. Fitness hearings review whether an accused can participate in a trial, or if their mental disorder is preventing them from: understanding the court proceedings, consequences of trial and/or if they are unable to communicate with lawyers.
Today, Lo was also charged with 31 counts of attempted murder, after being previously charged with 11 counts of second-degree murder. He is accused of driving his SUV into a crowd on April 26, 2025, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries. The decision brings relief to many community members who hope a criminal trial will provide long-awaited answers to the unimaginable violence of that day.
A decision on a publication ban will be made on Thursday, Sept. 11. The ban means that journalists and members of the public are prohibited from publishing, broadcasting, or sharing information about the evidence presented in court.
Filipino BC will continue to follow the proceedings closely.
We expect this to be a lengthy and complex case given its medical-legal aspects. No matter the outcome, we are committed to supporting community members and responding to the needs that may arise as a criminal trial unfolds.
Resources are available for anyone affected by the tragic events of April 26. The Kapwa Centre is open tonight, from
