Community Update | May 1, 2025

A temporary Resilience Centre has opened at Killarney Secondary School to support community members during this incredibly difficult time. The space is staffed by non-profit, faith-based, and government agencies who are present to listen, connect, and help however they can.

The centre is open Friday, May 2, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, May 3, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The Vancouver Police Department has confirmed that 11 people have lost their lives, with victims ranging in age from five to 65. As more information becomes available, we expect that number to rise. One of the surviving victims in the hospital has been upgraded from critical to serious condition.

Filipino BC has been visiting injured community members in the hospital and in the community to offer comfort, care, and to better understand what people need most right now.

In honour of those we have lost, the Government of British Columbia has proclaimed Friday, May 2, an official Day of Remembrance and Mourning for the victims of the tragedy that followed the Lapu Lapu Day Festival.

To support those affected, Filipino BC, in partnership with United Way BC, have launched the KAPWA STRONG fund to assist impacted community members. We are grateful to United Way BC for committing to cover all administrative fees, ensuring that 100% of donations go directly to those most affected.

Donations will go toward providing support such as counselling, funeral costs, and other emerging needs identified by the community. Funds will be distributed through a grant process led by United Way BC.

As we gather in grief and solidarity, we invite you to join upcoming memorials and ceremonies:

The Archdiocese of Vancouver is holding Memorial Masses throughout the Lower Mainland. The first service is on Friday, May 2, at 5:10 p.m. at the Holy Rosary Cathedral in Vancouver. A livestream of the event is available here: https://www.youtube.com/live/B6kZ_NLAb3w?si=ozO5yWMxDCMwZ4-e

On Friday, May 2, 2025, an Indigenous Healing Ceremony will be held from 12–1 p.m. at 41st and Fraser St., led by Rick Lavallée of the VPD.

We continue to hold our community in our hearts. Please reach out if you need support, and know that you are not alone.
