Community Update | May 14, 2025
A case manager from the Canadian Red Cross joined the Filipino BC team today to provide direct support for victims and families. They were able to speak with two families and will follow-up with them regularly to support their ongoing needs. Two more case managers (one Spanish-speaking and one Filipino-speaking) will join our team soon as they work to connect with people affected by the tragic events of April 26, 2025.
The new Kapwa Centre for Community Resilience opens this Friday at its new location at Christ City Church, on 5887 Prince Edward St. in South Vancouver. The Kapwa Centre is just a block away from John Oliver Secondary School, where many are gathering at a makeshift memorial to honour the 11 people who lost their lives. We encourage everyone who has been impacted to stop in to gather, rest, share a warm meal, and access support if and when they’re ready. Our case manager will regularly attend the Kapwa Centre, in addition to the social workers, counsellors and other support staff who are available to the public.
The Centre will be open for the following dates and times:
Friday, May 16 - 5 PM to 8 PM
Saturday, May 17 - 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM
