Community Update | May 23, 2025

The Kapwa Centre for Community Resilience welcomed about 30 visitors Friday, a week after opening at its new location at Christ City Church in South Vancouver. Thank you to Chef TJ Conwin and Cyril De Ramos who both visited the Centre and provided delicious adobo, lumpia and garlic rice from the Vancouver Filipino chef meal train. Lola Mila also prepared another large pot of arroz caldo for guests and Ate Diana of Cake It Easy donated their popular ube cupcakes!

We continue to see families who are first-time visitors and regular guests at the Kapwa Centre. Parents are bringing their children and older adults are bringing their parents. The Centre reopens again tomorrow, Saturday, May 24, from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM.

A big thank you goes out to T&T Supermarket, which matched donations from customers for a total of $20,000 raised for the KAPWA STRONG Fund! The funds will be split between United Way BC and Filipino BC for crisis response work.

Filipino BC is hosting its first grant writing session on Sunday, May 25, for nonprofits and community groups with a society number, that plan to apply for grants under the KAPWA STRONG Fund. We recognize that many nonprofits and community groups have been supporting underserved communities for years, and grants of up to $25,000 will support them in providing vital crisis response services.

Grant writing can be a barrier, but this session will guide applicants through the process. Register now and you will receive an email tomorrow, Saturday, May 24 with the location of the workshop.

We encourage people to have a look at our recent post listing KAPWA Strong fundraisers and community events. As we approach a month since the tragic events of April 26, community members continue to support recovery efforts. Generous donors know that people affected need more than just a reactionary response, and it will take months and years of supporting the community to restore its well being and rebuild for future generations.
